How Hailey Bieber, Alia Bhatt & Gen Z Made Acne Patches Cool
Inside the tiny dressings that absorb oil, pus, and speed up acne recovery.
There was a time when a single pimple could ruin your entire day. You’d slather on concealer, awkwardly try to hide it, or worse - cancel plans. But thanks to some celebrity icons and Gen Z, that’s changing.
Today, you’ll find people sporting pimple patches in all shapes and forms – transparent, neon-colored, circular, star-shaped, even clouds and rainbows. In a culture that has long shamed people for their acne, the humble acne patch is a bold “screw you” to that narrative. There’s power in accepting your skin wholly, and a pimple patch just might help you do that.

Be it TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or the media – your favourite celebs are swearing by the patch. They are flaunting them while they’re out on grocery runs. No concealer, no filter.
What Is an Acne Patch and Does It Even Work?

An acne (or pimple) patch is basically a tiny vacuum-sealed dressing for your pimple. It sucks out the bad stuff from the active acne and helps it heal.
Each patch is made of 2 layers:
A waterproof outer shield: Keeps bacteria, dirt, moisture, and your fingers away (so you don’t pop or pick)
A hydrocolloid inner layer: A hydrocolloid is usually made of materials like carboxymethylcellulose, it acts like a sponge that soaks up the gunk (pus, oil, fluid) from your acne.
This creates a moist, sealed environment which helps your skin and acne heal faster. Think of it as a no stress vacation for your acne.
Some patches are infused with acne-fighting ingredients:
Salicyclic acid → unclogs pores
Niacinamide → reduces redness and inflammation
Tea tree oil → fights acne causing bacteria
Best for: Whiteheads, surface pimples
Not for: Deep, cystic acne (a patch can’t reach that far down)
But wait, how do you even use one?
Important: Never pop your pimple before using a patch, it defeats the purpose and increases risk of scarring or hyperpigmentation. Sometimes a zit might accidentally pop - don’t worry; clean the area before using it.
Step 1: Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser
Step 2: Do not apply other products on the pimple - keep the area dry.
Step 3: Stick the patch directly on the acne
Step 4: Leave it for 6-8 hours (or overnight)
Step 5: Peel it off gently. You might see a white dot - that’s the gunk that has been absorbed.
Step 6: Rinse your face with water or a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser
Step 7: Moisturise with a non-comedogenic ceramide-based moisturizer to strengthen your skin barrier. (promotes healing without clogging pores)
Note: If your pimple is raised or visibly filled with fluid after removing the first patch - wait for at least 30-60 minutes before applying a fresh patch.
Make sure the skin is clean and completely dry before applying (no product at all). Do not reapply more than twice in 24 hours to avoid over drying or irritation.
Is it hygienic - doesn’t it trap moisture?
Yes it is! Hydrocolloids are designed to manage moisture, not make it worse. Think of the patch as a band aid for your acne but smarter. You just need to ensure your skin is dry before applying the patch.
FAQ: Should I use it during the day or night?
You can use hydrocolloid patches either during the day or overnight - it depends on your schedule and comfort.
